When the avid movie-goers are grumbling over the lack of content over Indian films with high production value, here comes Jhangri for Malaysian audiences, like a breeze of fresh air, doing exactly the opposite!

Pre-release hype (4/10): Solid start over social medias and local radio channels. After the huge blockbuster storm of Mersal, the successfully running horror flick Aval and the newly released Aramm will offer tough competitions for Jhangri. Hopefully its comedy/romance genre stands out to the crowd in a busy market for tamil films right now. Hopefully, Malaysian will support their own local products as well...

Songs review (9/10): 'Enna Kaaranam' and 'Thooki Erinjittu' are the two tracks of the film. These songs, although had its released a month earlier, will stay in your head for months to come! Simple, melodious and powerful!

Story, screenplay, plot & dialogues (8/10): A film that succeeds to keep audiences glued to their screen till the very end credit scenes is an evidence of the impact of the film. It may not win the Oscars but it has enough to win your hearts over the 1 hour 45 minutes running time. Its witty, simple and natural comedic-romantic script has played a huge positive role in this Malaysian budget film.

Performances (7/10): Every actor on-screen had enough screen time for their characters to develop, heroes and villains alike. Surprisingly, they all managed to pull out a very natural and convincing act on. Vicran-DaView Puvanan's chemistry was a comedic riot while Agalyah Maniam executed her emotional/angry scenes beautifully.

Songs-in-movie sync & timing (8/10): Wishful thinking for another song in the movie, but two songs placed at the start and towards the end of the film had a solid overall impact already.

Technical team (-/10): Due to the low production budget of the film, the technicalities may be forgiven.

Cinematic value (-/10): Do not go in expecting mind-blowing surround sounds and picturesque scenes, you'll get none.

Conclusion: A movie you wished had the perfect budget to beautify a solid Malaysian product. Applauds for the performances. dialogues and songs. An honest attempt that would not disappoint. You'll leave the cinema hall humming a song with a smile. Will definitely look forward for another film from the team, with a better overall quality this time around!

Pre-release hype (1/10): Coming a week after India's release into Malaysia, hype was little to none. Slight buzz generated with good reviews and active social network marketing by distributors nudged the film up a little. Limited release in Malaysia.

Songs Review (-)

Story, screenplay, plot and dialogues (7/10): It had the ability to connect with audiences from the very first scene. Dialogues and plot was raw and direct. Sensitive real life issues were explored well. Enough pace to keep you hooked. Nothing to complain about and courage to delve into tabooed topics in society is a welcome.

Performances (10/10): For a script demanding natural and powerful performances, honestly, I'm not sure who else would have perfected their roles better than those in the film itself! From the main characters (Andrea & Vasanth) to cast with smaller roles (Anjali & Azhagam Perumal), it was their acting that made you not realize you were watching a movie!

Songs-in-movie sync & timing (9/10): No issues whatsoever as stumbling blocks to screenplay. No songs brought out of story and no commercial aspects to it. Huge plus for this film.

Technical team (8/10): BGM from Yuvan was mild, subtle yet powerful when it should be. Silent scenes spoke really well. No issues here whatsoever as well.

Cinematic value (4/10): Although my watch was on 'Herotalkies' (legal streaming site), I don't see a need to watch it as a compulsory in cinemas. Lots of scenes that needs to be watched alone or in silent due to seriousness of matter and no heavy uses of surround system as well. Don't really have to watch it on the biggest screen + biggest sound. Honestly, I don't regret not being able to watch in cinemas. You won't miss much anyways.

Conclusion: Maybe not a must-watch on the big screen but definitely a must watch of the year!

Clarification: I need to add this because although cinema is just a form of entertainment and not to be taken so seriously in the first place, not many will have the same mindset while watching films. This movie however dealt with real life issues of LGBT and disloyalty in marriages, and therefore gives audiences a sense of reality and truthfulness. Therefore, I would like to clarify a scene of which Althiya will address her husband after finding out that he is a gay. Both of them, seemed to play their roles as Christians yet not a true Christian in walk of life. This is because Andrea as Althiya will state to her husband that being a gay isn't a sin and it isn't his fault. Biblical references on the other hand will support and agree of homosexuality being a sin.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Homosexuality falsifies what God designed. Sin often means not only rejecting God but denying or rejecting how and why we are made. Though it may be considered acceptable by some today -- even in some churches -- it is not acceptable to God. And we need to take that seriously. In spite of the growing secular humanist trend to think "it's ok to be gay," it's not a righteous lifestyle. Most vocal Christians are not homophobic, but are trying to share Christ's love for homosexuals and trying to keep them from horrific judgment. REFERENCED FROM HERE

I'm not trying to create a ruckus here but would personally like to clarify with viewers who would have accidentally accepted this scene to be morally correct from a religious point of view. Thank you for your understanding.

Pre-release hype (9/10): It has been a long wait and a long build-up to it as well! Being promoted as an International Spy Thriller Film, hype has been high and healthy too. Expect huge box office collection in its first weekend due to advance bookings!

Songs review (6/10): Anirudh's music is loud and peppy, far from his best.

Story/screenplay/plot/dialogues (2/10): Under-developed plots, lots of logic loopholes and mistakes for an international film. Wish it focused more on the story. Dialogues on the other hand were mediocre. Some action scenes are influenced by Hollywood films as well. Writing for the villain role was a joke. Major disappointment in this category.

Performances (8/10): A full mark for Ajith sir for sure. Kajal was acceptable and Akshara Hassan brought freshness when the movie began to dull. Besides that, everyone played their part well without any major issues, in exception of Vivek Oberoi who was made more of a joker than a villain.

Songs-movie sync/timing (4/10): While Ajith singing with a mic over Yogi B's voice seemed unnecessary in 'Surviva' and 'Kadhaala' song being predictable, 'Veriyera' track at the climax was enough to spoil the film.

Cinematic value @ technical team (10/10): A major plus point of the film. Without it, Vivegam might just end up as the worst film of the year. Anirudh's background music, editing and camerawork at its best. Definitely worth the watch on a big screen!

Conclusion: One time watchable on the big screen. Applauds for grand set-pieces but a definite disappointment for cinema-lovers.

Finally, beating the hype, craze, crowd and personal excitements, I can proudly say that I've watched Theri (First day first show) as it released tonight in selected Malaysian cinemas and from everywhere tomorrow onwards. Being a Vijay fan, I would like to say that I'm not interested in writing a biased or selective review. I'm a fan of good films/quality cinema and I never hesitate pointing out the flaws or celebrating how awesome a scene could be. So here it goes, my Theri spoiler-free review;

What makes up a good film? It's ability to convince you to watch it again becomes the strength of success for any movie nowadays. So the very question that came up to my mind was, should I go for Theri again? The 'Vijay' in me would definitely force me to go for it but then the rational self of me denies this premise. What could have gone so wrong?

The film deserves a very big credit just for its background score. If it was Anirudh setting the bar for Kaththi then its G.V Prakash Kumar for Theri today, he has nailed it big time by surpassing every expectations! Songs were placed timely in the film and was never a major barrier in screenplay. Everybody on screen justified themselves as an actor or actress very well. Be it the playful Nainika-Vijay combo or the romantic Samantha-Vijay pair, these combinations were a delight to watch. The technical team behind the film lifted the film to the level it is now. Just by seeing the trailer we would have known how good the editor, cinematographer, stunt master, make-up artists or costume designers should have been and yes, they lived up to the expectations very well. The costumes were eye-pleasing, the action sequences were finally realistic and the screenplay goes so quick that you wouldn't even know what the whole thing is about. It's either a racy film trying to chase a ghost or a distraction so that you wouldn't grasp the plot.

Theri feels like a mash of genres, battered so fast and unevenly most of the time. It tries so hard to do everything and show everything that it finally ends up being its own suicide rope. Remember how 'Thuppaki' developed a single social message of an army man overcoming terrorism or how a common police officer could take down a powerful tycoon in 'Thani Oruvan'? That's the very reason why you visit these films regularly as the theme of the film was an attraction by itself. When it comes to Theri, it slams moral messages unto your face every now and then without developing them into a single powerful concept. The whole film feels under-developed and were mostly predictable as well. I guess the only thing that worked in this Atlee-Vijay combo were the 'massy' scenes, which was a cakewalk for Vijay himself in the first place and its occasional powerful dialogues throughout. Despite the talented casts, expertise in technicalities and a whole lot of budget, no mass or class of Vijay could save this poorly under-developed, deeply commercialism-rooted and predictable film from being what it is.

Conclusion: Way better than 'Puli' yet so far from 'Thuppaki'. A few powerful hits yet mostly major misses throughout.

An ace director, a reputable actor, chart-busting songs and an all-exciting teasers and trailer has led to a mega-proportion of expectation for this Dhanush flick. With the premiere shows being put on hold all over the world a couple of days back, fans just couldn't hold on to the hype anymore. So going in with a full-house cinema and mind-boggling hype, will Maari satisfy the fans like how VIP managed to pull off?

The only thing you can never question about Maari is how well the technical team has lifted the film throughout. Be it the camerawork or cinematography, those guys can be proud of what the film had produced. The other positive points would be Robo Shankar's comedy scenes, Anirudh's touch in the film and the performance by Dhanush throughout the film.

Now here's why Maari doesn't work. Predictable storyline, repetition of scenes, draggy screenplay, Anirudh's repeating background music, overdose of 'massy' scenes without any justifications, overlong slow-mo shots and most probably one of the worst climax scenes I've seen for this year alongside 'Kanchana 2'. Running for only 2 hours and 18 minutes, audiences were already grunting at how long the journey was going to be. Some people left the theater even before the film actually ended and that pretty much sums up what you're in for!

Conclusion: Style over substance commercial flick strictly for the hardcore fans.

India's most expensive film yet has seen the light of release today. The doubt of not catching the film at least once in cinemas is already considered a sin thus the reason behind the review today is whether or not Bahubali could stand tall besides Hollywood films today.

The effort from the entire team can be seen clearly from the moment the title was literally pulled up to the very last scene in the film where the biggest twist awaits you. No doubts, full marks for the performances of all the actors and actresses on screen and a big applause for the make-up team and all the people behind the technical aspects of the film. I'm sure all the other review sites will have plenty to praise about the film.

To cut short, let me just bring up the negatives. Honestly I wished I was the type who didn't bother about all this minor issues in the films. For the effort and money spend on this epic drama, I wished I could score it a full mark but nothing could ever be perfect. The first half of the film brings us to a romance adventure journey which is filled with unnecessary songs, predictable romance and a mass hero with superhuman abilities blended with logic-bending stunts. Post interval, the film begins to pick up speed in screenplay and eventually gears up for 'The Lord of the Rings' phenomena blended with the style of Indian cinema, which also means logic needs a rest again. The use of CGI is extremely heavy in this film and has been above average on most scenes. A few scenes felt like drawings on walls or cheap-like animation we see on television. Although it doesn't live up to your Hollywood standards, it is definitely one of the best use of CGI in Indian cinema, bearing in mind there's still a lot of room to improve.

Nevertheless like I've mentioned, missing this film on the big screen is a huge mistake and instead of regretting in the future, stop thinking twice and go get the tickets for it now already!

Conclusion: When you're dining in a gourmet restaurant, it's best not to be extremely fussy on how your food tastes. Just sit back, relax and enjoy what you're in for!

Not sure for you guys, but when it comes to Malaysian films, the only time it will ever play on my television is when someone gets a DVD from shop outlets during Thaipusam or when it airs on cable TV or in our local channels. We often hear people urging us to support our local industry but will our local films ever live up to the demand of the audience or the standard of film-making the industry has today?

I'm not against Malaysia's Tamil films but sometimes we need to accept the harsh truth and reality behind it. In these past few years we've seen so much improvement from our industry. Films such as 'Appalam', 'Vennira Iravuggal' and 'Maindhan' has seen huge success and garnered positive response all over the country and not to mention CK's 'Maindhan' taking the box office by a storm last year. Do these movies really live up to our expectations and standards when we look back to it today? Partly yes and partly no. The major factor that brought 'Maindhan' success in the box office was due to the negative response of Surya's Anjaan, which somewhat released around the same time. A perfect timing of release, heavy promotion and positive word of mouth worked off for the film that right now sits as the highest grossing Malaysian Tamil film of all time and rightly deserved as well.

It was only after 'Maindhan' that I started to give a thought of watching a local film in a cinema and today we have the team who brought us 'Vetti Pasanga' and 'Vilaiyattu Pasanga' with their new venture, 'Vere Vazhi Ille'.

[ SPOILER ALERT ]

Running for only 1 hour 20 minutes, I thought I was in for a horror-comedy ride with a racy screenplay but I came out of the hall disappointed, wanting the film to end as soon as possible.

Let's get to the good parts first. Performances by Denes Kumar, Magen and Alvin Martin were highlights of the film as they brought the film up with their comedic timings and dialogue deliveries. Most of the comedy scenes had the whole theater giggle ( which only consisted of 10 of us or so ) and made me wanting more of it! Jasmin Michael although looked like she's starting to age was a wonderful sight to the eye and her chemistry with Denes on screen was a joy to watch. Not forgetting the man behind our ears, Daddy Shaq for producing background music that somewhat gave the film the pace and tension it needed. Kudos to the animation team who created the intro flashback scenes as they were neatly done. The first 30 minutes or so had me hooked on to my seat but things fell apart the moment the whole gang got together in the complex building to solve the horror-crisis they're about to face.

The scariest moment I had with the film was by looking at the poster and that's all. The so-called horror element in the film was a major letdown. Instead of making us jump, the film made us close our ears as the film gets too noisy to handle. Screenplay starts to loosen with time and the plot gets too predictable nearing the film's end setting up for a climax that barely engages. The other technical aspects of the film was above average at times. Had the director took time to handle the script a little better in the second half and cover up some loopholes in the film, it would have fared to become a decent film altogether.

With Papanasam released and Bahubali and Maari coming up ahead, the competition for Veedu Production's release will only get tough with the weeks to come. Could the good word-of-mouth give this film the success it needs? We just need to wait and see. Anyways, wishing the team a great success and hope you guys keep it coming. Give us what we want and we will do the rest!!!

Conclusion : All is not lost for 'Vere Vazhi Ille' as you will leave the hall with a smile recalling those funny moments from the film. Go for it with your friends for a jolly-good time.

[ SPOILER FREE ]

It's barely two months since the release of Kamal's Uttama Villain and yet we have another chance of catching him on screen again. Away with make-ups and costumes, Kamal sir has returned by being truly himself in Papanasam.

Knowing it's a remake of a Malayalam film and the status that the original film got for itself, I went in for Papanasam with pretty high hopes and expectations. The million dollar question is, was it worth it?

Papanasam, a family-centered drama and thriller indeed has more positives to balance it's minor flaws. Scenes around the village, the slang used, small comedic scene that tickles the inner you, powerful yet consistent dialogue deliveries and the emotions played by every single character in the film deserves a praise. There's no need to review Kamal's award-winning performance. He needs to get a new shelve to keep the awards that he's about to collect for both Uttama Villain and Papanasam. Ghibran's music needs to be brought out in the light too as he knows how to grip audiences with his background music.

The only thing that pulls down this masterpiece is the length of the film. A few scenes came up as repeats and sometimes certain scenes were shown at length to showcase the situation. Yes it does build up suspense but there's always a limit as the audience would want to see the very next scene already. Just a little issue to deal with nonetheless the direction by Jeethu Joseph backed up by good camerawork and neat editing keeps audience engaged throughout the film.

Go for the film at least once to experience a quality drama thriller the Tamil cinema has not seen for some time. Without gimmicks, unwanted songs, group dances or physic defying scenes, Papanasam will definitely delight and hook you on your seats.

Conclusion: Get ready to feel a fresh breath of air on screen and grip on for the ride!
It's been almost a year since I did my reviews and Mr Karthik Subbaraj, you've made me to write this up because your Jigarthanda was freakin delicious!

Whistle and clap points :

Cast that fitted their roles perfectly

Flawless performance from Simha, Karuna and Siddharth

Background music from S.Narayanan was magical

First-class editing, cinematography and camera work and probably one of the best in Tamil industry till date

Vijay Sethupathi's cameo appearance was well done

Storyline that grips you for an almost three hour film. The heart-stopping intermission block and a couple of twist and turns henceforth made the film special and worthwhile.

The so-so points :

Lakshmi Menon did justice to her role and despite the three hour runtime, she had just a limited screen time but my god she did made an impact during emotional scenes.

Mokke points:

None

While the first half of the film gives enough thrills, the second will just simply turn you around from what you expected it to be. The hardwork thrown into it is clearly seen and my sincere wishes that the film will be a super-hit!

Conclusion : Fresh, gripping and refreshing. Jigarthanda sets up the benchmark in Tamil cinema. Mass and class served well!

Debut director Manikandan had made the right choice by releasing KLTA for this year's Ponggal celebration not because the film is very good but because it outruns Karthi's most anticipated Alex Pandian in all ways possible!

Three best friends KK (Santhanam), Power (Srinivasan), and Sethu who were always very close ended up liking a same girl and their different approaches to tackle her is the film's backbone. There wasn't a single twist in the film thus makes it very predictable all the way but did you really enter the cinema hall to witness a long complicated drama or to crackle at Santhanam's punchy liners?

The only highlight in this film is the comedy scenes but was it really up to the par with Siva Manusula Sakthi or Oru Kal Oru Kannadi? The answer is sadly no. The film tries very hard to be funny at times thus forcing the cast to overreact at certain scenes which is pretty annoying especially scenes involving Powerstar or/and Kovai Sarala. There were also many hectic scenes where a few characters tries to talk at the same time which actually was a pain to the ear. The first half of the film had only a couple of laugh out loud scenes and for a film with comedy genre, it was really disappointing. Second half of the film was a better part and the scene in the bar was a winner. Santhanam again steals the show all way long, no doubt about that. Background music and sound editing was a major minus and the cinematography was just decent. Songs that were nice to ears were downgraded by poor dancing skills of actors on screen.

So who won the Ponggal race this year? Neither Alex Pandian or Kanna Laddu Thinna Aasiya deserves standing ovation but there stands up a guy in both these films, bringing cheers for this festive season as much as he could and my sincere wishes for his streak success to continue.......

I'm a bad bad bad bad boy!!! This song is all over my head right now.....well maybe that's why it was placed in the credits scene...to cover up the whole flaw the film had throughout!

NEGATIVE POINTS : Let's cut short, the plot of the film was too predictable and the twist which they had in it will only satisfy a 6-year old kid. The film is a tamil action-masala film that seriously portrays Karthi as a mass hero, in this case, extreme mass hero. The first 5 minutes into the film where Alex Pandian is involved in a fight scene on a train will definitely prove to you that this film was just going to be a flop. Karthi's previous films especially Siruthai was way better than Alex Pandian. Moreover, Anushka was just for a glamour purpose and didn't appear much on screen. The action in the film is a major flaw as it lacked style and cool punch dialogues. The villains' acting in these film was the worst I've seen in tamil cinema but I don't blame the actors as director Suraj needs to wake up!

POSITIVE POINTS: Karthi-Santhanam combo rocks on! Super comedy all the way to the interval but not really the best of the best. Karthi pulled off his role as a mass hero very well and his dialogue's timing was good to hear. The songs in the film had brought life to the wilting plot and all five songs were better on screen than on your mp3 players.

Overall, Alex Pandian is a sheer disappointment all the way long. Deserved stars for Karthi, Santhanam and songs only. Avoid spoiling your Ponggal celebrations.......
The year's most anticipated film in Tamil Industry is finally rocking in cinemas near you beginning today. I would like to be honest with two things, one I'm a fan of Venkat Prabhu's direction and secondly I'm not a Thala's fan. Vijay had always been my favourite but after watching Mankatha, Thala stole my heart!!!!

As what the plot was buzzed around with, Mankatha revolves around a Mafia gambling gang and so it was afterall. ( SPOILER ALERTS ). First scene of the film will definitely pump your heart at max rate because this is one hell of a way to introduce Thala in his 50th film. Not only that, people will start going mad when 'Vilayadu Mankatha ' song is set early in this film! The only downfall of the film was the first half where some scenes were so easily predictable and the plot develops slow and steadily. At a point you will be feeling bored to death if you predicted all upcoming scenes and if you did just like me than you just took Venkat Prabhu's mega bait !!! When you are hooked to your own mind-plot and when it all goes with a flow, second half of the film will make you stand up and whistle for the direction. It was all about MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY....UMMAH.

Direction wise, Venkat Prabhu sir had developed much since Goa and his direction keeps on getting better and better and better.Premji Amaren, famous for his comedy tracks did a few laugh-out-loud scenes only and we know there was better comedies in Chennai 600028 or Goa but that doesn't matter much in an action-thriller film. Ajith sir too had comedy scenes with Premji which tickles your stomach as they produce unforgettable scenes. Truthfully, all credits should go to the cinematographer and film editors Sakthi Saravanan and Praveen/Srikanth. Editing was stunning, actions were amazing and Thala was rocking the ground in every single appearances !!!!!!

Not forgetting our Action King, a special op Police Ofiicer who tracks gambling activities and somehow plays cat and mouse with Ajith. No worries because you can finally see Action King and Thala on a one-one fighting scene in the climax which went with a twist that cramps your whole body. Thala is,was and will be the best villain of all time and all previous villains cannot be compared to Thala's style, dialogues, stunts and expressions.Yuvan's background score blended well with the film and songs which already topped the charts will make you sit and watch them playing instead of going to the washroom. On the other hand, Trisha was just a toy whom Thala was playing with and she did not execute on the main storyline much. Buzz was going around that Vijay was in the film but actually it was just a cinema scene where ' Vinnai Kappan Oruvan ' song was playing. One thing you can't expect to see in this film is real-life gambling scenes despite it being a gambling-mafia-money film. Ending credits shows some warm yet funny scenes from the film's shooting and you would go off smiling happily after watching those mini clips. Everyone played their parts well and credits should be given to Venkat Prabhu and his team.

Mankatha is being a massive hit in Malaysia during all first day shows since all tickets were sold out. I'm proud to say that I was the early ones to catch Mankatha on the big screen. Mankatha could easily be a blockbuster for all it's hype and could be equal to last year's Endhiran.

Despite being as an Ilayathalapathy's loyal fan, I trully loved Mankatha for it's uniqueness and thankfully it was not a typical Tamil mass masala film. Overall, Mankatha is thrilling, heart-pounding and mind-blowing although some scenes were predictable and slow but that should not stop anyone from watching it.
Drama - 7/10
Overall - 8/10

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! Vijay is set to return after a series of flops and his return is absolutely fantastic in Kavalan. The definition for Vijay's Kavalan : A soft and fluffy dough of pizza layered with melting cheese, topped with mixtures of mouth-watering fillings and baked in a hot oven. LOVE IT!!!

Kavalan is not Vijay's typical masala film with punch dialogues and rough actions but it is proven that a film is better without it. The plot was somewhat a remake of 90's Tamil film with today's state-of-the-art technologies. You need to understand that the plot did not make the film good but rather the performance executed by the cast.

In this romance film, Vijay is ordered to be a bodyguard (Kavalan ) to an ex mogul's daughter ( Asin ) and love blossoms unexpectedly between them. When I say UNEXPECTED, I really mean it! Why? The twist in the climax will make some of you cry or even go mad......

Kavalan will never bore you easily because of our Vaigai Puyal Vadivelu. His comedy scenes will definitely hit the charts this year but it was not as good as Boss Engira Bhaskaran or Siva Manasula Sakthi. He will make you laugh if you are willing to do so. Therefore do not go with very high expectations for the film.

Oh yeah the songs. When they had the album release I did not find the songs interesting enough. Even before watching Kavalan, the songs just can't get into me. I am surprised to say that the plus point of the film is the songs itself. It was shot beautifully in different locations and the lyrics will drive you towards the screen. Ekambaram has done a fantastic job as cameraman (even though Kandasaamy and Sura were average) because many scenes, especially the songs had camerawork like Hindi movies. This is one of the films that you must not go to the toilets during the songs.... :)

Best thing about the film is the camera will not show Vijay all the time like his previous movies and all the characters acquire proper screen time and importance. Go to the movie with no expectations and you will definitely enjoy. The director deserves praises and credits for making the film fun, enjoyable and intriguing.

Kavalan is a must watch.......
